Biography
Gary A. Welch has been building things in the Brazos Valley since 1981. In 1988 he went out on his own, doing both landscaping and carpentry. In 1998 he decided to concentrate on hardscape construction and started Welch Construction Inc.
He has built his business based on quality workmanship, and he personally guarantees his finished product. He spends most of his time working as a craftsman on the jobsite and leading the crew to a proper completion of every job. By doing this he hopes to eliminate the communication breakdowns which can occur between the office and field personnel.
Gary says there are two main reasons he enjoys his profession. First, each job is different and presents unique challenges and satisfaction upon completion. Second, his work allows him to meet and work with the great people of Bryan-College Station and the surrounding area. |
Bid Policy
Welch Construction Inc. offers a free initial consultation and free estimates. In some cases Welch Construction may incur additional planning costs, but these are generally refundable if Welch Construction performs the work.
Testimonials
"My wife and I asked Welch Construction to build a wooden fence around our back yard. The results were outstanding and exceeded our expectations. We continue to receive compliments from friends and strangers alike on how attractive our fence is and how much it adds to the appearance of our property. We could not be happier with our fence and would recommend Welch Construction to anyone needing help from a group of true craftsmen." --Mike and Nancy Newman; College Station.
"Gary Welch built our deck five years ago. He listened to the ideas we had and drew up a plan that complemented the outside design of our home. We have hosted many parties on our deck and we have enjoyed many compliments about it over the years. We love our deck..." --Debbie and Charlie Rognon; College Station
"I'm particular about which contractors I have working on my house so I vetted Gary's construction plans and his references and found both to be impeccable. Gary built two beautiful pergolas above my front porch and entryway. I've got ivy and wisteria trained up the columns now - I can't wait to see how it will look when it blooms in the spring. I described to Gary what I wanted, he built exactly what I described. I am very pleased with the results. I recommend Gary without hesitation." -- Jeff Keys, Bryan
"Home or business construction projects can be awfully frustrating. Well, I have found a 'diamond in the rough.' Gary Welch designed and built on our patio one of the most beautiful arbors I have ever seen. He was professional, communicative and flexible on every detail of the project. But the fun part was dealing with an up front, honest, no bull kind of guy. What a breath of fresh air for this industry." --John Welsh, College Station
"Gary constructed a very complicated arbor and a paver patio for our home in Nantucket. Gary doesn't shy away from a design just because it is difficult or intricate. We got to be good friends during this project, and we look forward to our next one." --Bernie & Paula Bernard; College Station
"We have used Gary Welch on several projects including decorative fence construction, an arbor and a bridge project. All of these were completed on or before the projected completion date, exactly on budget and the quality of workmanship was excellent. An by the way, you get to work with a really nice guy who is very talented." --Dr. Charles Gray, College Station
"Thank you so much for the beautiful work you did on our arbor and bridge! Both turned out even better than I had anticipated thanks to your vision and craftmanship. I appreciate the fact that you listened to what I wanted and was able to give me advice on how to achieve the look that would compliment the landscape the most. Thanks to your work ethic, both of the projects were finished in record time exactly as discussed." --Kelli Gray, College Station

Types of Projects
- Shade Arbors: Shade arbors are beneficial in areas you want to use in the summer but cannot because the heat is overwhelming. Arbors can also shade the wall and windows on the hot side of the house and help keep the home interior cooler. Arbors are very attractive and are strong enough to support climbing vines and hanging baskets. Normally arbors are built with cedar or redwood, which stand up well to sun and moisture; they can be painted or stained if natural weathering is not desired.
- Decks: Decks are a good solution when you need an outdoor living, dining or entertainment area. Decks are usually built level, which is ideal for a table and chairs, other outdoor furniture or a hot tub. In the local area decks are usually framed with treated pine lumber and surfaced with treated pine, smooth cedar, redwood or composite decking. Wood decks can be sealed or stained to add years of life to the surface.
- Bridges: Bridges will get you from one side of the creek or dry streambed to the other while adding an attractive feature to the landscape. They range from lightweight arched foot bridges to heavier structures that span a greater distance. Wood or metal handrails can be added to insure a safe crossing
- Benches: Benches provide convenient seating and can also define and secure deck and patio edges where handrails are not needed. Most benches have no back but provide a good perch for outdoor activities. In certain situations, though, a short slanted back can be added to provide additional safety and a good place to lean back and relax.
- Handrails: Handrails are used wherever a good safety barrier is needed, especially to meet city code requirements. They range from simple ?two rails and a cap? to more elaborate designs which may include square or turned balusters and decorative post caps. Handrails can be built with any of the common wood or synthetic materials, as well as iron. Gate panels can be installed for easy passage
- Gazebos: Gazebos provide an excellent environment to enjoy the outdoors. They provide shade and shelter from the weather and are a perfect place for a porch swing or chairs. Ceiling fans and lighting can turn them into outdoor living areas. The flooring inside the structure can be concrete, wood, brick or even tile. Gazebos can be built with four, six or eight sides; a decorative cupola on top will add style and provide ventilation. Benches or handrails can be added to close off some of the sides if desired.
- Wood Fences: Wood fences can provide simple security, keeping pets in and others out. Security fence styles range from simple six-foot tall notch-top pickets to eight foot (or taller) fences with flat cap, lattice or trellis panels at the top. Shorter picket fences can give a more open feel, define an informal boundary, or just provide a decorative backdrop. Semi-transparent or solid stain will add durability. Most fence designs will also satisfy swimming pool fence requirements.
- Trellises: Trellises are a good way to establish ?soft? barriers and screens. They are usually hand-built using 1x2 or 2x2 cedar to form the rectangles; the panels will be strong enough to support climbing vines. Trellises can be integrated into deck and arbor designs to provide a bit of privacy--yet keep the cooling breezes--with a natural border.
- Patios: Concrete and clay paver patios offer a solid, low maintenance surface that will last many years. They are most often built on a stabilized base and then laid on a thin layer of sand. The borders can be straight or curved, and are usually retained with a concrete beam to prevent shifting. The pavers are available in solid and blended colors and several different styles and sizes.
- Retaining walls: Sometimes a slope or drop-off is so great that the area must be terraced and leveled to make it safe and useable--or simply to prevent erosion. Retaining walls can be built with concrete block, stone or wood. With proper attention to structural needs, drainage and backfill, a retaining wall will meet the demands of retaining soil for the long term.
